LaTex2e Books
Anyone who intends to use the new LaTeX in any real way is strongly encouraged to get at least a copy of:
- LaTeX: a Document Preparation System (2nd edition) by Leslie Lamport (ISBN 0-201-52983-1).
- The LaTeX Companion , by Goossens, Mittelbach, and Samarin (ISBN 0-201-54199-8).
LaTex2e Online Articles
The following documents may help you learn the new LaTeX. They will not serve as a replacement for Lamport's book.

LaTex2e Software
To use Latex on a Windows operating sytems (NT/2000/XP) , you will need the following packages:
- Latex compiler: The MiKTeX distribution .
- [Optional] Editor: WinEDT (actually, you can use any Windows editior).
- Viewing: Ghostview and GSview .
This document explains how to convert a MS Word document (and some other formats) to LaTex2e.
To use Latex on a Linux/Unix-like systems , you will need latex, pdflatex, xdvi, dvips and gv.
Most Linux distributions include these packages. Otherwise, you can find out where to download and how to install these packages from TeTeX-HOWTO or the LaTex2e project site
